Website Name Search - How Important Really Is Your Website Domain Name?

Have you performed your website name search? Does your domain name matter? The simple answer to that question is YES; your website domain name is very important. Your domain name is your brand in the world of the Internet.

Every effort you make to market your website, your product, your service and your reputation all contribute toward that brand. So take your time to plan and conduct your website name search.

Does the name Apple sound familiar? Microsoft? Dell? Google? All these big names have spent their life blood on establishing their names so that we all can remember them even in our sleep.

What URL do you think you would type if you wanted to buy a computer from Dell or browse Apple’s collection of laptops? Exactly! And that is why domain names matter. Similarly, your website’s brand is its domain name and you need to do everything you can to establish the reputation of that brand.

A Good Domain Name

A good domain name is directly related to your business in some form. Either it involves your product, your industry or your philosophy, it has to be directly related to your business in some way. Your domain name needs to be easy to remember and not commonly misspelled. The shorter and catchier your domain name, the more likely it will be remembered by a website visitor.

Involve your company name, product or a keyword related to your industry in your domain name. If possible, register all three. You can always set domain forwarding so that all 3 website domains point to one main site. For example, if you are in the business of selling Pet Medicine and the name of your company is Pet Medicine, Incorporated, you may want a domain that reads www.petmedicine.com.

Now if that domain is not available, try a domain name that suggests you sell pet medicines. Try something like www.pet-med-seller.com. And if even that is not available try searching keywords related to your industry and use them in your domain name. For example, one keyword combination that is popular within the pet medicine industry is “healthy pets”. Try registering www.healthypets.com or www.health-for-your-pet.com. I think you get the idea here. If all of these are available, then buy all of them. It would be one of the best $7-15 investments you will make.

Benefits of a Good Domain Name

There are many benefits to having a short, catchy and relevant domain name to your online business. The entire concept of search engine optimization (“SEO”) revolves around relevancy. Search engines are in the business of organizing information that is most relevant to the user’s search. With a well prepared website that contains good quality content that is relevant to your business, coupled with a relevant domain name, can give you an immediately advantage over your competition.

The advantage you will have will be inherent in your website. There are many Internet users who will directly type in what they are looking for in the URL field of their browser. So going back to the Pet Medicine example, someone looking for Pet Medicine may directly type in www.petmedicine.com. Do you see the inherent advantage here?

Take your time on deciding on what you want your online identity to be. The time you spend is well worth the results that you will be getting later on. Keep the name short, relevant to your website, and one that is not commonly misspelled (if possible).

No Body Said It Would Be Easy

A common predicament you will run into is that domain names can be lengthy, especially ones that involve keywords and phrases related to your industry. Most others, especially the good short ones have mostly likely been taken by someone. Don’t be discouraged and keep looking for the best one that you can get your hands on.

There are tools available that you can use to help you search for domain names. Go on Google and search for “domain name analyzers”. Here you can input your keywords and the tool can help you with a domain name that is relevant to your business and is available at the same time. You can also use programs like Word Tracker or Adwords that provide you with the most popular keywords related to your industry.

You can then input these keywords in a domain analyzer tool to help you generate a domain name that is available. If you don’t want to use an analyzer, you can do a trial and error experiment yourself by combining keywords and coming up with a domain name that is available. Always register the .com extension first. If available, go ahead and register .net as well, and then the rest depending on your website purpose and how broad you want to go (.biz, .org etc)

Used Website Domains Are Not Like Used Cars

Unlike used cars that depreciate in value and die in performance within a certain period, website domain names only gain strength and credibility over time. If you have some disposable cash on hand go ahead and search for website domains in the aftermarket. There are websites that are dedicated to selling already registered domain names.

Here you will be able to purchase domain names that are owned by others who have put them up for sale. Expect to pay a premium for these as there are many that are in the business solely to sell domain names to entrepreneurs and other big businesses that need them. Other resources to search are bulletin boards and webmaster discussion forums.

Any domain name can be bought – but at a price ;-)

If you can’t find a domain you like during your website name search, you can find who the current owner of a domain name is by searching the WHOIS or domaintools.com database (unless the domain is masked). If the domain name you are interested in is already registered, use the information provided to contact the owner and see if they are willing to sell you their domain name.

Buying currently owned domains is not uncommon, but each seller’s price will vary depending on their perceived demand for the domain name they own. Alternatively you can always backorder the domain name so that it becomes yours if and when the current owner does not renew it. Backordering a domain name is a simple 2 minute process. Try it now if you have a particular domain name in mind.
