Website Content Development - Effective Web Writing

Effective website content development is critical to your success online whether you are providing information for free or selling a product or service. How you write and the tone your words convey to your visitor makes a big difference in how they perceive you.

First impressions make a big difference in shaping up the perception, trust and credibility factors, all of which define your visitor’s behavior on your website. Hopefully some of these website content strategies in this discussion will help you stay on the right track.

You want to catch your visitor’s attention and then retain it through engaging content. If you are selling something, you want to be confident, persuasive and highlight the benefits of your products or services. Visitors want to know what’s in it for them. You need to tell them this right away!

What you say and how you say it makes a big difference. So determine the message you want to convey, how do you want to come off and how do you want to be perceived. Effectively write your content accordingly and have some friends and colleagues read it to see if you were successful in bringing out certain reactions and feelings in them.

Effective Website Headlines & Section Titles

This is your gateway to your visitor’s attention span. Remember, you only have 3 seconds and approximately 7 words to catch someone’s attention online. Make sure you do that by writing effective headlines and section titles on your WebPages.

A headline or a title is a must on each WebPage of your website. Attracting a visitor by writing effective headlines and titles is no different than writing effective advertisements. Read this section for more on how to effective ad writing.

In a nutshell:

  • Keep it under approximately 8 words

  • Address your reader directly and relate to them by asking a question, telling them “they can do it too”

  • Engage your visitor and entice them to read further

  • Don’t use all capital letters and avoid too many “special characters” (?, !, &, %, etc)

  • Tell the reader right away what’s in it for them by focusing on the benefits of your offer

  • Have your headline flow right into the body of your content

So What’s In It For Me?

Your visitor will ask this question right away! Effective writing on the Internet requires that you communicate the benefit of your offering early and as effectively as possible. Think about it for a second – when you are browsing the Internet and come across a certain website, don’t you immediately ask yourself how that website can benefit you?

Likewise, your visitors will do the same. Understanding you audience is the key step when it comes to communicating the benefit to them early. If you know your audience, you must know what will entice and attract them to your website and keep them there. You must know what they are looking for and need. That is why you are on the Internet to begin with isn’t it? You are there to cater to your website visitors.

So forget everything else and focus on stressing the benefits of your offering. Once you feel like you’ve done this successfully, move on to other facets of your website such as who you are, a bit about your website’s history, etc. all these other facets are important, but they are all secondary to your primary objective in effective writing; which is to convey the benefit to your visitor immediately and effectively.

Address YOUR visitor as You!

Address your visitor as if you are talking to them directly face to face. Many website makes the mistake of overusing “I” and talking about the website or the founder. Your visitors really don’t care about all that. Not at the onset at least.

Your visitor needs to be convinced of the benefit they will achieve from spending time on your website. Only then might they become curious to read about your website or yourself.

Couple other things to keep in mind are “pre selling” and developing your own unique tone. Pre selling is the process by which you warm up your visitor to a sale by providing good quality content that over delivers their expectations.

Don’t try sell too hard. In fact don’t sell at all. Discuss your subject openly, directly and honestly while providing relevant content and the sales will come. Sooner or later your visitors will gain the confidence and see the credibility in you to open up their wallets.

Developing your own unique tone will help establish that relationship you want with your reader. Your visitor must see your personality through your website. Be unique, be yourself and always stick to that tone. Speak from your experiences and develop that connection with your visitor.

Include Your Product Or Service On The Home Page

If you have an eCommerce site, present your products or services on your home page. Your visitors must know what you are offering to them right away! The last thing they want is to see a lot of text but no product images.

Not everyone will read everything on your website. Save all the wonderful stories for other sections such as the “About” and “Contact” sections. Keep your home page concise and to the point.

Create A Search & Sitemap Function

Often neglected is a site map and search function within a website. These sections are important so that your visitors can find their way through your website, especially if you have a lot of WebPages.

In addition, search engines like to see interlinks between WebPages. Include a snippet in your directory section that briefly explains the content of each WebPage listed. At the very least, include a link back to your home page on every page of your site.

Keep your table of contents or navigation menu consistent from page to page and clean in appearance. Locate this in a visible area such as the left hand side of the screen or the top header.

Include these key sections in your website content development efforts

Website Content Theft

Protect your website content by copyrighting it! With piracy on the Internet readily possible, you want to protect your hard work and Copyright your website content.

If you don’t Copyright your content, you may become a victim of website content theft. There is a possibility that someone else copies your content and benefits from it. And if that person files for a Copyright first, it will be very tough for you to claim that the content is originally yours.

Read this section for a comprehensive discussion on copyrighting your website content & website content theft.

Get Your Website Content Reviewed

After you develop your website content, go through your entire site pretending you are a new visitor. Ask yourself if you have succeeded in delivering the message and creating “that feeling” which you intended.

I know this can be a tough task since you developed the site yourself. But try to pretend you don’t know much as you are browsing the website. Is your website content clear? Does it have enough details for a new visitor to get comfortable?

You have to assume that your visitor knows very little about your subject matter, unless you have a website on a specific niche or technical concept where your target visitor is someone well versed with your website’s subject.

Can you find the information you are looking for right away? Ask yourself if your website content flows smoothly and if it is organized in a logical and self explanatory manner.

After you are finished navigating your website, get it reviewed by your peers and colleagues. It is very easy to become complacent and miss something as the creator of the website content. A second set of fresh eyes will often see something that you likely missed. the results are well worth the efforts.
