The Purpose of Web Design

The purpose of web design is two tiered, one to create a visible webpage for your visitors to visually see and the other is for your webpage to communicate with your user.

Unfortunately, many web designers forget the later. What good is your webpage if it cannot communicate with your user? And to communicate to your user you need to learn their language.

This means you need to learn how your users interact with webpages, and not just create webpages for the sake of creating them.

So how does a typical web surfer use webpages?
  • They use your webpages to quickly find what they are looking for. Web surfers are in and out type people. They donít have much time. They are busy and want their answers now!

  • They donít read everything you have to say. They donít even read most of what you have to say. They skim webpages looking for headlines and other hints to their answers.

  • If they like you, they will bookmark you or remember your website and revisit it. They wonít spend hours reading your website right then and there.

  • Web surfers are like store shoppers. They are big on impulse buys! Their decisions are made on the go without much thought at all.

Great, so now what? Well now you have to learn the skills you need in order to cater to your website visitor. The reason why most designers fail is that this behavior really isnít anything you are used to. It is different from any other industry of experience you have had.

There are three very basic rules to tackle this question. If you follow all three, I can assure you that your website design wonít be the reason your website is not hitting on all cylinders (of course you need to optimize it for search and market it).
  • Rule # 1 - Knowing your typical website visitor is the most important task. You must be clear on who you are catering to.

  • Rule # 2 - Once you realize that, you need to stick to the basic website design fundamentals discussed throughout this website all while keeping the purpose of web design in mind.

  • Rule # 3 Ė Keep it real and keep it simple. Stick to the principles of simple web design discussed throughout this website. Keep your content focused, fresh, original and over deliver.

The idea behind this short section is to introduce you to the main purpose of web design and then to tell you how to achieve that purpose.

There are successful websites out there and you should see what they are doing best in order to leverage what has worked in the past. There is no reason to start completely from scratch.

You will be able to design a very effective website if you just understand the basic points outlined above. Always keep the main purpose of web design in mind whenever deciding what to do with your webpages next.
