Learn what to do right and what to avoid with an online business start up




January, 2005 was my first online business start up experience. I launched an eCommerce company that I had been working on for nearly 18 months. The business model revolved around a wholesale drop shipment concept. I was the only online store that offered genuine designer fragrances at wholesale prices to both retail and wholesale customers. The website charged an annual fee to become a member of the discount club and in return members were entitled to shop unlimited quantities of any fragrance at wholesale prices. The site served retail buyers, wholesalers that buy in bulk to resell and other frequent buyers of designer fragrances.

The website was not designed using the program I have used to design this site. Knowing what I know now and had I discovered Site Build It (“SBI”) prior to launching my online business start up, I would have definitely used SBI to design, host and promote the business. It was a very difficult task optimizing the website and getting it the organic exposure it needed to reach the next level. And although the business was very successful and consistently generated profits, a lot of the customer acquisition came through paid advertising such as Google Pay-per-Click and Yahoo Search Marketing (previously known as Overture).



Work Smarter, Not Necessarily Harder

Some of the online marketing strategies I implemented to make my website successful were Search Engine Optimization (“SEO”), eMail and Newsletter Marketing, Search Engine Marketing (“SEM”) and hiring a public relations firm that issued Press Releases regarding new developments in the business. The site became self sufficient and very successful over a 30 month period and I was able to sell the business at a significant premium.

Success wasn’t as easy to achieve as I now think it could have been. It was a tough and at times frustrating road. I learned a lot on the way, specifically what to do and what not to the next time I take up a similar project. I learned how to create and market an online concept from ground up to success by applying hands on strategies and putting in a lot of long hours and hard work into it.

Knowing what I know now, I could have expedited the success of the site by at least 2 full years without nearly as many hours of hard work that I had spent building the business. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying you won’t need to work hard. But there is a big difference in working hard and long as opposed to working smart and efficient. With the right information and tools I could have achieved the success I did in less than a third of the time. And that is exactly why I have created this website, loaded with the facts, do’s and the don’t(s) involved in website creation, optimization, marketing and making money online.



Try Not to Outsource Your Website Work

I made a poor decision from the onset when I decided to outsource web design and development of my website. Please learn from my mistakes and believe me when I say that you loose control of your website if you do not take the time to learn the development software and are not able to make changes and updates when needed. I have dedicated a full section on this website on thinking twice before outsourcing your website’s work. Trust me, with the sophistication and ease of use of the tools we have today there is no reason why anyone cannot create and market a website successfully on their own.

You also loose out on a lot of the support when you decide to outsource your website’s work. Although there are forums and discussion boards on pretty much every software or program that is used in web design and development, until you take the time and initiative to learn it, you will always feel lost and will be dependent on someone else to help you modify your site to take advantage of new opportunities. You cannot just rely on your developer to be there for you. Just ask me, mine was out of sigh within 12 months of the site’s creation. I can’t even get them to respond to my emails. Not to mention that every time you want something done to the site, you are charged a hefty fee for the modification.

More so than the technical aspect of the business, I had difficulty in optimizing the website to get the search engines to recognize and index my website. I will once again stress that a good site will not do you any good until you are successful in optimizing and marketing it. Regardless of what website creation tool you use, you will have to optimize it to get recognized by search engines. You will have to determine how to and more importantly where to add the keywords, descriptions, meta and title tags. Depending on the mix of the software you use this process can be extremely frustrating and often challenging for most.

Despite relying just on organic exposure, in just 6 months, this site that you are on had surpassed the page rank and traffic results I was able to generate with my ecommerce website well after putting in over 24 months of constant hard work. That says it all!



My Website’s Genesis

When I was doing my research I identified a critical need in the supply chain of designer fragrances. There were many small resellers that were often ignored by larger wholesalers and distributors and that took my research findings from concept to website. I should have put in just as much time and effort in researching the tools that I was going to use to materialize the concept into an online business.
