Microsoft Front Page - RIP

What Happened to Microsoft Front Page?

Do you remember Microsoft Front Page? Yes the good ole’ Microsoft HTML Editor that was around for what seemed like decades!

The beloved Front Page was discontinued back late in 2006. It was the leading HTML Editor for 9 straight years (according to Microsoft – and I can believe that). Newer technologies from the competition just demanded drastic changes.

Apparently Mr. Gates and his team of experts at Microsoft have decided to stop supporting the FrontPage versions that are out there today. I believe I still have FrontPage 2003 and can develop a perfectly fine website out of it as it is. But I can’t count on calling Microsoft if I needed help or had a question.

Microsoft has proposed the following route for existing Front Page aficionados:

Microsoft Front Page

You are most likely to fit in the “No” category on the right which points to Microsoft’s new Expression Web HTML Editor. And since SharePoint Designer will not apply to you, I will keep this discussion centered on Expression Web.

What is Expression Web? Expression Web is the rebirth of a bigger and better FrontPage. That’s the best way to say it. It will enable you to build dynamic websites that you can design, develop and maintain as trends change in web development.

Expression Web is partially based on the old FrontPage technologies and was launched back in 2006. Since then it has received rave reviews from its users. It is recommended for you if you are a web designer as it is a professional tool designed to create sophisticated and broad reach HTML websites.

I had an opportunity to use it last year when toying around with a few website designs and was pleased with its usability. If I wasn’t as addicted to SBI and Dreamweaver as I am, I’d probably give Expression Web some more attention. But for me, there is no sense in mastering more than a couple HTML Editors.

It all comes down to comfort level. If you are comfortable with something and it satisfies your needs, then stick with it! I certainly recommend Expression Web if you have not developed an HTML Editor of your primary choice as of yet. Give it a shot. It is very intuitive and great in functionality. Best of all, it comes with superb Microsoft support.

Here is more information on Microsoft Expression Web.
