How Does Wordtracker Work?

Anytime you research a particular word, Wordtracker goes through millions of recent searches conducted online on that word and provides you with the word’s popularity. It also searches the number of times there was an exact word or phrase match to your chosen query; also known as your keyword competition.

It delivers results for you in what’s called a KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) format. The popularity and competition factors are used to mathematically calculate the KEI, which is the popularity squared (multiplied by itself) and then divided by the competition.

The result of this mathematical equation is used by most search engine “optimizers” in deciding whether or not to use that particular key word/phrase. The higher this number is the better in terms of its demand (frequency of search) and competition (the less you have to compete with).

The output from your searches is provided in a tabular format, listing many keywords that are relevant to your website’s concept as well as what your competition is using to optimize their webpages. If you are unsure about investing in a keyword research tool, don’t worry. Wordtracker allows you to use their program free of charge. The free version is a bit restricted in its functionality and capability but in my experience it does quite alright.

A good idea might be to plan out the theme of your website first. Once you know your major topic, you can subscribe with Wordtracker for just a couple weeks and conduct research on numerous keywords and phrases. There is no limit to how much you can search.

Wordtracker allows you to export your results into Microsoft Excel, which means that you can walk away with hundreds of potential keywords/phrases after just a couple weeks of usage. At that point you can decide if you want to keep their subscription or simply cancel it and move on with your website.

Though the output of your searches will be limited in some respects, I’d recommend trying it out to get an idea of the program’s usability and capability. It is fairly simple; a self-explanatory wizard will help you do your research.

Keep in mind though that the trial version is limited in the features it shows you. You will see your output in a very basic, general format. The full version includes many more advanced features such as top ranking reports, full searches, misspelled words search, comprehensive searches, etc.
