Starting an Auction Website

Creating an auction website like eBay can be a challenging task. Not because it is difficult, but rather because it requires a lot of time, patience and persistence. More importantly, it requires a solid understanding of ebay-like, bidding websites, how they work and what it takes to make them successful.

eBay is the God of auction websites, we all know that. However, what many don’t know is that there are many other similar websites out there that are doing very well.

See, success is relative and what my measure of success is might not be your measure of success. Therefore it is important to keep thoughts in perspective when approaching this subject matter.

Changing Your Sentiment

Rome wasn’t built in one day was it? Not very many things are. Typically a project like an auction website starts with an idea. It starts with your idea of what you want to purpose of the website to be, what do you want to sell, how do you want to sell and who is your target market?

Many of the smaller successful auction websites today are “nichier” websites that focus on a certain niche. All these sites started their ideas by keeping their focus area in mind and developing an auction website to cater to their niche. That is a big reason for their individual successes.

I am not advocating that you restrict yourself to just one niche. However, focus on one niche to begin with and only add another once you are getting the results you want from your initial niche. Replicating the same successful approach to another niche should only expand your reach.

Think out your approach

It is not realistic to expect everything right here and right now. It is important that you layout a project plan where you outline the different things you want your auction website to incorporate within it.

Set milestones and make a condition of not getting ahead of yourself. It is easy to delve into multiple ventures when you are inspired and feel confident about what you are doing. You might also think that time is of the essence and that you need to do everything right now.

Take a step back and realize that if you do this, you will spread yourself so thin that you won’t get much done at all, or not as effective as you should at least. Take each task one at a time and slowly build on your progress. Take your time, build momentum, correct your mistakes and continue to add value to your target users and you will definitely be successful.

Monitor Progress & Deliver Results

Once you have a good size community built, continue to try different things and solicit their feedback and opinion. The responses of your community members will define what they need most and will dictate the development of your auction website.

After all you want to provide what the customer wants, not what you want to sell. By consistently tending to your community and listening to what they have to say, you can shape up your path to satisfy their needs and attract more users looking for the similar need.

Like I said, once you have determined a successful model or approach, you can implement the same when you expand to another niche. Keep repeating the same again and again and you will continue to grow and see success.

Lure Visitors through Search Engines

What does everything boil down to on the Internet? Traffic! I cannot repeat that enough. You may have seen a pattern by now. No matter what your website’s purpose is or what your method of making money online is, everything really comes down to being able to generate quality traffic.

This is no different when it comes to creating a successful auction website. You will definitely drive traffic to your website if it provides concept based quality content. Once you start generating traffic, you can create an auction section that your traffic can benefit from once they have landed on your website.

This is an excellent strategic, non-invasive approach to your visitor. Your goal is get them to your website in exchange for the quality information you are providing them with. The auction component is merely a “segway” to add value to their experience.

Create Your Auction Website

You are now ready to roll your sleeves up and get started building your website. You will need a good HTML Editor and a web host for this step. I recommend you use Dreamweaver for your HTML Editor and BlueHost for your web host provider.

The investment in these tools is worth every penny. And if you don’t already have a domain name for your auction website, read more here and purchase your domain name.

Once you have the shell of your website, add keyword focused content and optimize your WebPages to attract search engine traffic. Once you have some WebPages up and running and you start to build traffic, search the web for “auction website scripts”.

The scripts are part of the critical HTML code that will define the auction process on your website and allow you to set auction rules according to your plan. The development can get a bit complicated here. Don’t worry it’s nothing you cannot do.

There is plenty of free information on the Internet that can teach you how to set up and make the scripts work within your website. Most of these scripts come with detailed guides that you can use to guide you in setting them up. If you are not provided with one, simply go to Google and type in the name of the script with the work “guide” or “documentation” and you will find one.

A better alternative and my recommendation would be to hire a short term programmer from RentACoder and outsource this part of the project. Make sure the programmer you hire clearly explains what was done and how to make modifications and changes in the future.

You can hire a programmer at a very reasonable rate through RentACoder. You can review each programmer’s profile, rating and reviews and you don’t have to pay until you are satisfied with the work. Most often, you are naming your own price so I definitely recommend going this route.

Life After Development

Your work does not end here. Like any other website, an auction website requires aggressive marketing for it to be noticed. You need to consistently improve your websites search engine exposure and promote it through the following:
  • • Search Optimization

  • • Search Marketing

  • • Link Building (exchange links with websites similar to yours in concept)

  • • Article Marketing

  • • Pay-Per-Click Advertising (Optional only once you start making some money)
Once you start to see the traffic build and some nice profits coming in, you can then consider expanding within your niche or even experimenting with another niche. Also consider paid advertising (last bullet mentioned above) once you start making some money from your auction website.

All that said, I mostly recommend you to free yourself from Ebay dependency. OWN YOUR OWN TRAFFIC! DIVERSIFY YOUR PRODUCT OFFERING! AND BUILD EQUITY THROUGH SITE CONTENT!

This free guide to Internet Auction Websites will help you do this. It is written by one of the pioneers in the internet marketing industry Ken Evoy. I have read it twice and I highly recommend this free resource for you. You will be ready to build a real auction businesses that you own in no time.
